Disability Services

Northampton is a diverse and welcoming campus. Our goal is to provide all of our students with the tools they need to access and maximize their educational opportunities.

Disability Services offers a variety of support and guidance to both prospective and currently enrolled students with disabilities. Services and accommodations are offered to facilitate access to both college programs and facilities in accordance with all applicable laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Universal Design

Universal Design (UD) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.  The UD framework provides guidelines that promote flexibility - removing barriers to learning.

Why is UD important in at NCC?

As faculty and staff we are committed to making learning environments welcoming, accessible, and usable to the entire student body.

As faculty and staff we place a high value on diversity and inclusiveness.

Examples of UD in Education:

  • A statement on your syllabus that invites students to meet with you to discuss their learning needs.

  • Multiple delivery methods that motivate and engage all learners.

  • Assessing student learning using multiple methods.

  • Including examples that appeal to students with a variety of characteristics with respect to race, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, and interest

  • Captioning videos / providing video transcripts.

  • Providing alternative text for graphic images on web pages.

  • Using software that is compatible with assistive technology.
