Making Community Connections Count - Service Learning How to Guide

by Jackie Novak (Adjunct Professor, Communications)

Many of our faculty members already incorporate service learning in their classes, but if you are not already doing it, you probably have a few questions. Let me help you out. What does service learning look like at NCC? The service learning program at NCC compliments student education by connecting course content to service learning opportunities in the community. But, what does that really mean? Service learning is a course-based (not program / major based) service experience related to course material that must include a reflection component. So, students work with you and you can work with Deb Bohr (or reach out to me if you are at Monroe and need support) to identify a non-profit organization fitting the interests of your student. Working together a service learning experience will be created. Your student(s) will complete this experience in place of a designated course assignment. Students are required to express their thoughts and feeling regarding the service learning experience through a reflection activity such as directed writings, small group discussions, and class presentations. Need ideas? Reach out and let us help you identify service learning ideas related to your specific course. I can also connect you with non-profits in the Monroe County Area. Email me: jnovak@northampton.edu Email Leann Duprey: lduprey@northampton.edu Email Deb Bohr: dbohr@northampton.edu Please share your service learning experiences so we can continue to connect our students to their community!
